Cedar Rapids Area Hospitals
The Cedar Rapids area is proud to support two advanced medical centers: Mercy Medical Center and St. Luke's Hospital. The residency program is supported by both hospitals.
Only eight city blocks apart, they share a common medical staff, but have separate administrations and budgets. This independence stimulates and maintains a comprehensive and cost-effective health care system.
Mercy Medical Center has 353 acute care beds and St. Luke's has 560. Our hospitals are financially sound. They are growing and changing to meet the needs of the community. Mercy has just completed a new Women's Center and Outpatient Surgery Pavilion. St. Luke's Hospital recently opened a new Heart Center, and a beautiful new Maternal and Child Health Pavilion.
In addition to the Family Practice Residency, the hospitals support educational programs in radiologic technology, medical technology, dietetics, physical therapy and hospital administration. Both hospitals provide clinical experience for nursing students from three local schools of nursing.
Our residency program ensures medical resources and learning opportunities not available in cities with competing residency programs. Residents work with a medical staff consisting of 300 physicians who serve a population of more than 250,000.
