Dr. Basel was raised on a farm in Williamsburg, KS. He graduated with a degree in electrical engineering from Kansas State University and worked as a project engineer before entering medicine. He attended the University of Kansas for medical school and completed a residency in combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics at the University of Michigan. After residency he worked as a hospitalist before coming to Cedar Rapids.

His current interests include inpatient medicine and pediatrics, medical education, and health care quality. In addition to his clinical duties, he is the Executive Director of the Cedar Rapids Medical Education Foundation.

Dr. Basel is married to Dr. Dayna Groskreutz. She grew up in southern Minnesota and is currently a faculty member in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Iowa. They
enjoy gardening, biking, and other outdoor activities. David & Dayna have two daughters, Hannah and Elsa.
