Sub-Internship


Objectives:

The learner will gain experience with important aspects of the Inpatient Medicine Rotation including:

  1. Development of clinical judgment regarding appropriate setting for care including outpatient, inpatient, skilled nursing, and long-term care facilities.
  2. Diagnosing and managing of inpatient medical problems across the lifespan with the best current medical information.
  3. Appropriate use and organization of specialty care and ancillary services.
  4. Importance of empathy and communication with family.
  5. Importance of communication with, and respect for, nursing staff and other health professionals.
  6. Coordination of community resources for ongoing care of patients.

Expectations:

  1. The student will function at the level of a new first-year resident.
  2. The student will take care of patients at Mercy Medical Center and St. Luke’s Hospital.
  3. The student will be part of the Inpatient Medicine Rotation team that will include an upper level resident, physician faculty, and PharmD faculty.
  4. The student is expected to do the initial workup of the patient, which includes obtaining and dictating a complete history and physical and developing a differential diagnosis.
  5. The student will develop a strategy for appropriate diagnostic testing and management and write admission orders under the supervision of a senior resident or faculty.
  6. The student will follow the patient from admission to discharge and write daily progress notes as well as dictate a discharge summary.
  7. The student will present the patient at daily rounds and suggest a plan for ongoing treatment and/or diagnostic testing.
  8. The student will help with consultation of, and ongoing, communication with specialists.
  9. The student will develop skills in communicating and interacting with nursing staff and other health professionals.
  10. The student will participate in discharge planning and arranging appropriate community resources.
  11. The student will have the opportunity to participate in deliveries.
  12. The student is expected to be on-call with a senior resident an average of every 4th night.
  13. The student will attend case-based conferences.

Students taking this rotation must be seriously considering entering the specialty of Family Medicine.
