Welcome to the CRMEF Curriculum CD!

What's on the CD?
The documents on this disk were developed in connection with a multi-year project to integrate medical informatics into the curriculum of the Cedar Rapids Family Practice Residency.

A variety of documents are included:
  1. An outline of the informatics curriculum, available in Microsoft Word (Curr13.doc) and HTML (Curr13.htm) formats. This is a recent version of a curriculum that has been frequently revised during the project.
  2. Statements of goals and objectives for individual topics. These are typically included as Microsoft Word (*.doc) files.
  3. Slide Shows for use in lectures and workshops. These are in Microsoft Powerpoint (*.ppt) format. In some cases, there are separate versions of the Powerpoint file for display and for printing as a handout..
  4. Text handouts. These are frequently produced from the lecture *.ppt files. But in some cases there is a separate *.doc or *.txt file.
  5. Homework or case exercises for the curriculum topics. These may be *.doc documents or spreadsheet *.xls files. The database topic has an example database *.mdb file related to the exercises.
  6. There are two interactive case exercises used in the Dealing with Uncertainty topic. These are in the form of Web pages (a collection of HTML files).
  7. A 50 item Informatics Inventory was developed to help us assess what our residents learned from the curriculum. A copy is included in the Inventory folder as a Microsoft Word .doc file.

How to use this collection.

Most of these documents are in raw form, developed for internal use in our curriculum and not customized for distribution. They are in various stages of completion and in some cases multiple versions are included.

The curriculum outline files are located in the root directory of the CD. Individual topics from the curriculum are in separate subdirectories (folders), usually named in a fashion that relates to the topic.

Most of the curriculum items, unlike this document, are not in HTML format. You will want to use an appropriate application program such as Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, or Excel to open the relevant documents.

Interactive Cases.

There interactive case exercises are used in the Dealing with Uncertainty topic. Click on the links below to run them in your browser.

  • The Case of Murphy Hobson
  • The Case of Lucky Hobson

If the links above don't work properly in your browser, look for the files in the Uncertainty\MHobson and Uncertainty\LHobson folders.
